My mother tested positive for the Corona Virus last weekend.
She is 92, has a history of respiratory illness and suffers from severe dementia. After many months without any issues, a few cases showed up at the assisted living facility that has been taking care of her. The place has been on lockdown with no visitors. Neither I nor my siblings have seen her in person since March.
She is showing no symptoms currently. She was moved to special unit in a different facility that is caring for Covid positive elderly. She has come close to dying a couple of times before. But this is the first time that none of her family could be with her directly when she faced a challenge.
Please protect yourself and those you care about as best you can.
Whatever thoughts, prayers and positive energy you can send to the San Francisco Bay Area for her and my family are greatly appreciated.
Q
My Mother is 89, suffers from dementia and is locked down in a facility that has had three Covid infections. I know what this feels like.
Hang in there.
Take care. Crossing our fingers for you and your mom.

I know I am not the only one here dealing with this.I saw a post recently that I think was by you.
It really makes for a heavy heart.
Thank for the encouragement and understanding.
You hang in there too.
Lots of prayers and thoughts are with you.
my father is a Physician and director of 3 nursing homes. Aside from the sad stories I hear from him about him losing patients to Covid, with no family close by to visit, I also I worry about him a lot as well as he is constantly exposed
I lost my uncle (58 years old) who was my wedding MC, my dads youngest brother, to Covid this summer. He left a wife and two girls (both sophomore at Duke). He was also a Physician at a nursing home.
I'm sorry to hear this. It's bad enough for a loved one to come down with Covid but to not be able to be with them even protected sucks. Good thoughts coming from the east coast.
I'm very sorry to hear that. I'll be praying for her.
Thoughts and prayers for you. That must suck.
Prayers and thoughts, hangin there.
I lost a co-worker. Great nurse who taught me a lot. I've worked in covid icu for months now. I've seen so many families say goodbye over zoom. I've been the last human being that a person ever sees. I've worn full length gowns and respiratory masks for hours so a person didn't have to die alone. I've told a wife that her husband and her daughter weren't going to survive the night. All while living in fear that I'm going to bring it home to my family. This virus sucks. And it is very very real

Best of luck and medical science to everyone affected so directly. My thoughts are with you and my mask is on.

Gimpstang,
As someone on the other side of this, seeing my mother through Facetime,
Thank you.
I am not sure I have words to fully convey how meaningful it is to make a connection, even a virtual one, to someone you love who may pass on. My mother's boyfriend video calls her regularly and infuses her with loving. When her dementia started showing up a few years ago, I decided leave nothing unsaid. Even if she passes away by herself, in her final days she will know that she is loved and cared about because someone like you made it happen.
That is an amazing gift to give.
Thank you again. Take great care of yourself and those you care about.
Wishing the best for both of you two.
Gimpstang, stay strong man. If you need anything, I'm a pm away.
Gimpstang: thank you. If you ever need anything, just ask.
Q: y'all are in my prayers
I'm really sorry to hear that.

I feel for you. My 83 year old father went in a nursing home on Friday after a trip to the hospital with pneumonia and a punctured lung from a fall. With his health history, it is the thing we worried about the most. My mother has dementia, and we worry about her being apart from him, as well. We are all pretty distraught about the possibilities and I've been mostly using GRM as an escape from thinking about him 24/7
I'm not sure what words will help, but I will definitely pray for her, you, and the rest of your family.
Sorry to hear this as well. Hopefully she never develops much past where she is now. This thread shows how badly Covid can affect a family.

I hope all goes well for your mom.
In reply to gimpstang :
Thank you for being able to be there, I don't know that I could. I know the doctors and nurses with my dad went so far to keep us up to date with his condition and assure us he was as comfortable as possible.
We lost my dad early on and weren't able to communicate with him. When we told his bus company they sent some iPads to the hospital he was in so patients would be able to FaceTime their families.
Prayers to you, your Mom, and the support system, Type Q.
You said "My mother's boyfriend video calls her regularly and infuses her with loving."
She's 92 with a boyfriend. This made me smile. I'm glad she has someone like that.

Good news.
It is 14 days since my mother tested positive for Covid-19. She has shown no symptoms in that time . No fever. No chest congestion. Her appetite has been strong. She's been moved out of the Covid isolation unit and will soon be transferred back the place that is her home.
Thank you to everyone who took time to send positive energy whether through prayers, words or thoughts. As I type through tears of relief, I don't have words to fully express how much I appreciate the support.
