I see where he's coming from. For a while all I saw was a wall of yellow and green boxes and I didn't know what the hell it was. Swmbo tried it and she thought it was neat, so I decided to. We don't play against anyone but each other, and we're not all over about it. Like anything that becomes a cultural phenomenon, it can get annoying to the point of actively hating the property. Titanic for example, was absolutely insanely popular my senior year of HS. Not only was I single and lonely, I got tired of seeing everyone go all googoo about a movie where the boat berkeleying sinks. To this day I have not seen it, and I refuse. Same with avatar. People just ruin E36 M3 sometimes.
I knew I was taking a big risk starting a thread about so contentious a subject as Wordle. Please, gentlemen! Let us be civilised!
I have been doing them and finding them pretty easy after a lifetime of scrabble. But I have decided when NYT causes me to log in or watch ads I will quit.

Hopefully that won't be a word for you soon.
Everything boils down to money. The guy created the game and made it available for free, so millions of people have been enjoying a simple pleasure for free. But a commercial interest saw an opportunity to make some cash and wrecked it. Sure the developer also made money and I cannot fault him for that but I picture that board room full of executives discussing how to monetize a free word game and it picks me.

NYT has said they will keep it free for now.
Lots of stuff we enjoy for "free" isn't free. Like this forum.

Surely you are not attempting to assert that my spelling of the word "civilised," more commonly used in the United Kingdom, is any less correct than your preferred spelling "civilized?" Because if you are, well.... Them's fightin' words!!
You can't fight in here! This is the Wordle room!

I have not noticed a single difference since NYT bought them. Hopefully it stays that way, because as another poster mentioned, if I get ads or have to log in, I'm out.

My point is that it was free. And it is still free to continue to build the user base. Then it will not be free. Which I think is disappointing. It would be nice, again in my opinion, it not every single thing did not boil down to revenue.
I see that it requires you to use words from the pre-determined list, presumably so that you can't use non-word based strategies.
Interesting that apparently 'chode' is on the list, but not 'whore'.

I worry about this for my go-to online sports magazine, The Athletic. I pay around $70/yr for outstanding coverage of the NBA (it covers all the other sports and colleges, and stuff but I don't really care about those).
It was recently purchased by the NYT and while they have said they will leave things in place for now. I suspect eventually writers will be let go, quality down, subscription price up, until people leave and the original crew starts another service, etc.

P / A / T / I / O
That would be an excellent starting word.

I thought the same. I use audio to get the vowels out of the way.

Oooooooh I like that one. I've been looking for new ones, my one two three was crane hoist and plumb, assuming I needed more than the first two. Playing wheel of fortune rules.
So what are everyone's opening words or favorite test words?
In reply to Beer Baron :
As posted above I use Audio for the vowels, and every so often start with table or stump if I want to switch it up
Ooo, "audio" is a smart opener. I went with "feast," which was silly in hindsight.
I used to do ADIEU. Switched over to SOARE as mentioned. Watched a video where someone trained a program to learn to solve wordle, and it came up with SOARE as the strongest opener.
The other day when the word was VIVID, that drove me nuts.

That one made me have fits. I'm still mad as hell about today's though, I don't think that one's fair.
In reply to Mndsm :
It took me six tries but I did get todays.
I haven't landed on a consistent starter word, but l think MEDIA would be decent.
