The next time you hear someone coughing a long time, imagine they're trying to start an old Chevy. I know you can picture it.

SWMBO's coughing is the Magic Muffler Fiat in this picture:

Wow, someone on a grand cosmic level was having a laugh at my expense yesterday. First, my one ex calls me up and says she's in town and wants to get lunch. Okay, I'll be cordial. So, go to lunch where she tells about how great her life with her new boyfriend is, how they have a house up in NH and her photography business is running full-tilt, and she got fired from a job at a coffee shop but got hired at an art gallery for more money the next day. Cool. Yup, my life is still the same from when we last talked 2 years ago. Then, at a little before midnight, I got a couple texts from my other ex that were almost hinting at her wanting to get back together which I guardedly replied to. This morning she texts me, and apparently her phone got hacked or something weird because she didn't send any texts or have them on her phone but got mine. Well, thanks whoever for twisting that knife a little deeper.

Meh. Think of the lunch date as first ex posting on Facebook except in real time. She specifically wanted to get together so she could wave it in front of you. Don't take the bait, and remember she's got E36 M3 she's not happy about too, that was just edited out.

I'm not really buying second ex's hacking story, either.  Sounds to me like she was drunk or depressed last night and then embarrassed this morning.

I don't think either of those events were aimed at you, I think they were narcissistic of them. You're better off with them as exes.

I did something incredibly stupid and potentially life changing this week. Some day I should look into getting the filter between my brain and mouth fixed.

Actually, I buy that story, because in her screen shot, there is at least one text that I certainly did not send either. Something really weird is going on there. Interestingly, it would fit the narrative of the conversation, but it's not punctuated or capitalized properly, which is not my usual style.

I have never for a second regretted moving half a country away from my ex-wife and not being friends with her on any social media. Heck, at this point I'd doubt she even has my current phone number (though my emails haven't changed).

Last time I did that it may have arguably been the best decision I ever made without thinking.

Trying to get our hot water heater replaced.

One plumber quoted over the phone without giving me details about what they were going to install, which was great as we only have limited space available and a regular sized water heater will require a bunch of changes to the existing plumbing. Which I'm pretty sure wasn't included in their quote.

Second one promised a quote on Tuesday, then Wednesday but at least took the time to talk me through the options.

At this rate I'll probably just replace the circuit board on the existing, rather worn out water heater as I can at least get the parts for that and know how to do the work.

I wish folks would stop passing around renders for upcoming vehicles, at least in the cases that they're not based on leaked files or anything. The Ford EV SUV ones at least seem likely to have a grain of truth, but it sounds like the Tesla pickup ones are some "artist's impression" of what it might look like if they squashed the Tesla semi down into a truck shape. That's got no relation to the actual item. And yet now that image is tacked onto every tidbit about the upcoming reveal.

Some information, patently incorrect, is not better than a lack of information.

The one that drives me up the freaking wall is when a manufacturer reups the trademark on a nameplate and all the rags start going on about "Ford retrademarket the Torino name. That means a new Torino is on the way." No, you bumbling neanderthals, it just means that Ford is holding onto the nameplate so that Hyundai or Toyota or Dodge don't take the nameplate and start using it themselves. I remember a couple years ago, a dealership was taking preorders on a new Buick Grand National and had 30 or 40 people on a waiting list for a car that GM never said they were going to make, just because Buick retrademarked the Grand National name.

Decided to burn a vacation day today because a) Slayer concert last night and b) I really need to get this stupid 2-4 servo cover off my damn truck so I can finish the stupid shift kit install. And did I bother to check the weather before I made plans to wrench in the driveway all day? Of course not, and it's 45 and raining. I got a solid hour of miserable wrenching in and now I'm soaked to the bone and freezing my gonads off.

I'm also pretty well resigned at this point to having to pull the trans if I ever want to finish this job and I'm kind of too comitted at this point to turn back. So instead, it looks like I'm making a trip to the Hammer Store to buy a transmission jack in preparation for Saturday. Why couldn't I just leave well enough alone, fix the leaking cooler line that was actually an issue, and treat this thing like the cheap beater truck it is? Now it's a project. Ugh.

At least Slayer was freakin awesome, although Primus actually stole the show for me - genuinely one of the best live performances I've ever heard.

I occasionally have a problem with my right knee, especially with cheap shoes.  I needed shoes in a hurry and couldn't get my usual ones.  I got some that seemed similar and after a couple days my knee is killing me.

I make a habit of buying a pair of shoes while my current ones are halfway through their lifespan - I have similar issues in terms of various body parts being very particular about my footwear, and prefer not to run into this situation. It also allows me to wait out sales.

I feel your pain.  Literally.

Just got MRI results back... meniscus torn in two places.  If only WC had let me get an MRI after I got hurt, to find out what was actually wrong, instead of doing PT blindly for 8 weeks after an inaccurate diagnoses.

my wife works for a small private school.  It does bring her such joy to do what she does.  She makes very little money despite having two masters degrees because of her dedication to this school.  She is constantly buying things for the school with our money.  My kids have gone to this school... We get a discount but private school tuition for three kids before they age out and go to  Public Charter school next door is painful...

So.. on top of all that she said we have to donate to their capital campaign this year.  Expected donation is $600. but she wanted us to double that....

Silver lining is that my son youngest son only has 1.5 years left at this school.  I just added up what I have spent on private preschool over the years and I it's startling....

Kids are happy though and very smart and I can't fault the education.. It's been great.. but man.. I look at my neighbors and it would be great to send them to public kindergarten and get that money back in my budget each month.

I'd say that public school isn't bad, depending on location and what public school.

For instance, I did elementary at a Bay Area public school and it was great. Went to a Midwestern private school for half a semester and it was great in the learning sense, but expensive. Very next semester I went to a local Kansas City middle school and...the kids at this school could barely read and had no idea what fractions were.

If the elementary that you're distrcted in is rated pretty high, check it out. Save some money.

This was a primary reason why we (a) live where we do, and (b) moved out of the Chicago. I factored in the cost of Catholic schools (which are generally the best private schools in the area), and decided that we would be better off paying higher taxes.

I also look at the fact that my younger brother and I went to highly rated public schools, while our older brother went to highly rated private schools. We're all where we are and our primary/secondary schooling didn't have a ton to do with it. Our parents involvement did. Similarly, I have multiple family members that went to poorly rated public schools. You are supposed to say "Doctor" before their last names for 5 of those family members and another has 2 masters degrees.

Obviously you want to give your kids every chance you can - and that is why we moved to the school district we live in - but I think most of it comes down to the individuals drive and their parents encouragement.

The cost of installing an intercom at almost every site I manage: $4k-ish.

The cost of installing same intercom through same company at a site in NY: $30k-ish.

I just don't get it. I know the reason behind it, but I just don't get why we agree to it.

I just read a news article that many carriers sent text messages yesterday that were originally sent near Valentine's day and never received. Somehow the delayed messages were all just sent.

The quality of public school district is highly location dependant. Check your local one out.

My teaches at a large public school district which is well funded. My kids went/go there and the oldest is now attending an extremely selective university. They did OK by him. However, I still am amazed how many supplies she uses in her class that get bought from our Amazon account.
