We had a Fisher in the neighborhood last year but I haven't heard him this year. Their cry sounds like a baby crying and they like bunnies. My son thinks chipmunks or squirrels, but they've never done this in the 40 years here. Whatever this is tosses the dirt pretty far.
Gonna put a big rock there, but what do you folks think?
This looks very typical for a groundhog. If so, your son isn't far off since groundhogs are technically ground squirrels from the Sciuridae family.
In reply to 914Driver :
I’m with Curtis, that looks like a groundhog’s handiwork. (aka “nature’s bulldozer”) We’ve had a couple around over the years, rocks will help and there is critter spray available that they hate but won’t smell bad to you.
Put used cat litter in the hole. Then look around your property for its home and do the same. It'll move. They don't like E36 M3 in their houses.
Put a game cam down there. Remove all doubt.
Put a big rock there, sprinkled some Cayenne around.

Autopsy will tell.
False. The autopsy will be impossible after using that device.
