I was changing my timing belt for the first time and when I removed the crank pulley I got a good look at how much rust was on there. So naturally I started to clean it off. I was planning on painting it when I started wondering if I'd throw the balance off and destroy the crank.

Would removing the rust and painting kill my crank balance?

Not unless we're talking about spectacular amounts of either.

Thanks, although if the engine did go on me it would be a reason to put a 1.8 in it

Just to add another question to this topic, I heard that the bolt holding the timing gear on is a single use item. I've already got the woodruff key and was planning on reusing the bolt with blue loctite. Would that be ok or should I replace the bolt? My car is a 90 SNC FWIW.

I don't think it's single use, but it's cheap so a lot of people replace it as a matter of course. The Loctite and the correct torque are the important things.
