Fair market value is far higher than a dollar. An m45 in my area generally goes for about 400. 

Fair market value is what the item goes for in a normal sale. You may get it for free, but only because it's your father. If you were some random guy from Craigslist, hed charge you $xxx. 

Heres an example: my friend was cleaning up the shop. He gave me an aluminium seat, and 5 point harnesses.  This was just for me. However, he would not have freely given them to his neighbor fred. He would have asked fred for $50. Because they were not free to everyone, i cannot count them as free in my budget, even though i didn't pay anything for them. They go in my budget at fair market value of $50. 

Same with the blower. 

The intent of that portion of the rules is to keep things honest. 

Unless your dad was offering it to anyone off the street for a dollar, you'll have to FMV it.  That'd fall under the "inside deal" rule.

Got it. Also, the mini supercharger is an MP45.

So a change in plans, instead of megasquirt 1, I'm gonna give Speeduino a shot. Seems to be much cheaper and easier to use for a 17 year old who's never tuned anything. 

$50 plus shipping or trade for something of similar value on those coilovers

So I have a few ideas for aero for Cherry Bomb. I'm deciding between a ducktail made of street signs/scrap metal, buying a ducktail off ebay, or trying to find that 3 mount wing from canada. A few issues with each, 1 - I can't weld/fabricate crap, never done it and don't know anyone who does. 2 - budget. 3 - Rarity and budget.

How do gifts factor into the budget? A family friend wanted to buy something for my car to add in a little touch of him, so he sent me a shift knob. How would this factor into my budget, if I can prove it was a gift?

Fair market value or ask them for a receipt so you can add what they paid or my choice, swap the stock one on for the Challenge.

Yep. Challenge budget is only what's on the car during competition. 

Or sell/trade the stock one and use the new one for concours points

I think its half the budget can be recouped by selling parts, I dont think theres any rules about trades that keep you from making good deals.  Like, if you trade a stock shift knob for an aftermarket one because someone wants a factory car and not a modified one.  Just dont trade your spare tire for the supercharger, someone will probably call BS on that

Question about recouping...if a thief broke into my car while at autozone, didn't steal anything cause all my E36 M3 is locked up, but in a hurry to escape, left their airpods...can I recoup that into my budget...
