Oh yeah. The high school age kid helping load bags of softener salt at the store said "Hey, Mazda 6, that's a cool car!"

So there's that. I didn't know Mazda6s were particularly cool.

Now there are 2 car seats! For the second time in as many years I drove the Mazda5 home from the hospital with a new member of the family onboard. It's been quite a weekend :D

Winter tires on and oil changes. Boring reliable Mazdas make for boring project threads.

The 6 continues to amaze me with how much stuff it can swallow. Hatchback ftmfw.

The 6 hatch was such a unicorn car. Now the only way to get a body like that is the Kia Stinger or an Audi Sportback.

Do Mazda 5s spontaneously reproduce?

"We are getting a lease on a new car, would you be interested in our old Mazda 5, it's a 2009 with 63000 miles."

Um, ok yes please

So details on the 2nd Mazda5: 2009, super clean interior, some rust on the rockers/rear fender lips, and a stack of detailed maintenance records showing regular maintenance and oil changes... including a sheet with tire rotation notes of tire pressure and tread depth at each corner. The previous owner was an old school engineer, lol. It was owned by an elderly family member and basically given to us because "It's an old car but we know you have one like it and know how to work on cars." It hasn't been driven much in the past few years but should be in good shape since they took good care of it. My wife is happy because now we have two vehicles that can fit the whole family.

The wheels and tires on it are 16" TireRack steelies with older Blizzaks. The OEM wheels with good summer/all season tires are supposedly stacked in an uncle's garage, but the current setup will do for now.

The Mazda 6 will stick around for now. It's the least "nice" of the three so will be the first on the chopping block if we sell one, but it's good to have a backup during the winter. And honestly, I still just really like driving it.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for the 5? My 2009 is around 53k miles on it. Kinda curious what it's worth.

This one was pretty much gifted to us. For the other one, if I remember correctly, we paid $5500 for a 2010 with ~70,000 miles on it.  But that was pre-pandemic crazy pricing and I think was a bit of a deal as we bought it knowing it needed rear shocks.

We paid 7k for a 2008  60k example that is cosmetically scruffy in 2021

Mazda 6 needs a front wheel bearing. Her 5 needs a low beam headlight bulb so I added a bunch of bulbs to the rockauto order.

Not looking forward to the wheel bearing job.

Also fun fact, for some reason I had been thinking our little fleet of cars all had the same 2.3 engine, but it turns out the Mazda 6 got the 2.5 starting that year. So that would explain why it accelerates noticeably better than the Mazda 5.

edit: no but the 6 still feels faster for some reason.

Are you sure about that? I've done plenty of swapping and interchange work and research non the MZR and I've only ever seen the 2.5 originally installed in the second generation 6 starting in 2009.  The 3 got it in 2010 as an option with the redesign and the 5 got it with the redesign for 2012.

Yours may have been swapped though, it isn't hard.  A 2.5 will have "2.5" embossed on the block on the back side behind the header but closer to the crank pulley.

when i replaced front wheel bearing in my 03 (granted it was 10 years ago), the job was not bad at all.  because i don't have a press, i took the complete knuckle assembly to a local shop and had them press it apart for me.

I got a rear quarter for ours from raybuck auto body for $79 that I'm going to use to patch up my rusty wheel well. Just fyi that that's out there if you are wanting to fix it.

Mazda6 is probably a couple hundred pounds lighter than the Mazda5, so that's probably why it feels faster.

I've got two kids under 5 in a mazda5 as well, pretty good room. Not all the way back, but far enough for my 6'2" to be comfy. The front facing isn't a problem, the rearface was on passenger side to gain a bit.
