Actually they do it because of lifting limits set by the baggage handlers union.

That's interesting for two reasons.
i didn't know there was a baggage handler union and I have never had anybody other the me lift or get down my carry on. Seems weird some airlines don't have a weight limit and some do. Different baggage handler unions? Lol

Not for the carry on - to my knowledge, there exist zero restrictions for carry on weight, only size. This is for the baggage handlers loading the checked luggage onto the plane from the tarmac, and taking it to the conveyor belts.
