And people wonder why I'd rather be up to my armpits in snow than work in an office.

At one of my old jobs I had a 12x12 cube with 6 foot walls, a window and an actual doorway sized entryway. Best cube ever. I had 2 office computers plus my laptop. I was the team "mentor" and I also did security work. Basically if someone had a problem they called me. If the SHTF they came in and sat down.

Every time I get pissy about freelancing, I have to remind myself of the 19 years of hell spent working in a cubicle. I can get along with just about anyone, but I grew to absolutely despise the women on the other side of the walls. Non-stop, toxic, mean gossip about everyone, and nothing was sacred. Dumb, petty, mean people whose husbands were racist and whose children were going to be raised homophobic.

My issues are petty, but it still gets under my skin when people are whistling tunes or singing songs in a room full of other people that might not appreciate your whistling talents. Or the guy that takes conference calls......on speaker phone.......turned up loud. Or the other guy that will watch a training video or presentation, no headphones, loud.
Seriously people. Do you think you're the only one that exists?

My technique at the last two places I have worked is waiting for the person next to me to leave/get fired/get moved and then have a maintenance guy pull out the cube dividers and make me a double cube. Then when the next one goes, so on, get a triple. All it takes is a few donuts to the maintenance dept from time to time and you are golden.

At my current place I have managed to upgrade to a window that opens, a double cube, 2 monitors, a new laptop, a couch, 2 book shelves, and extra storage racks, all for being in the right place at the right time.

My cubicle is a 13000 sqft shop.

I'd blow my brains out if I had to work in some of the places you guys work in.

They do. Honestly, they really do.

TV is really weird..most of the place is "open" like slopecarver & ProDarwin were describing, but the actual control rooms are like a closed-in cube. Now that it's all automated, the most important part of the job is watching out for bad video or poor audio on the air, so the place is almost hermetically sealed.
